Flexible Systems

“Crowd-sourcing’ is one of those buzzwords which has lost it’s sparkle. All the rage just a few years ago, now it feels as flat as champagne the morning after the party. But it’s still very much alive in practice.

On the High Line in NYC there is the ongoing ‘Collectivity Project’ by artist Olafur Eliasson. Basically anyone wandering by can add to the morphing building of a cityscape, with the only ‘given’ being that it uses white Lego.

I think this is a brilliantly simple example of how to marshal random ‘crowd sourced’ creativity into a coherent whole. ‘Do anything – but only use this’. As a principle for a fluid piece of expression with a fixed objective I can’t think of a better example, not one where the sum is greater than the parts.

If you fancy adding a brick or two I believe today is the last day of the project.
